In 1861, the U.S. Congress authorized the production of 200 “medals of honor … which shall be bestowed upon petty officers, seamen, landsmen and marines as shall distinguish themselves by their gallantry in action and other seamanlike qualities.”
Over time, the honor evolved into the highest recognition for valor in the American armed forces. Fewer than 3,500 men — and one remarkable woman — have received the Medal. In tribute to all, we acknowledge the humbling stories of a few. NOTE: LIFE has elected to include the full text of the citations that accompany the medals. The extraordinary nature of the language, and of the deeds described, preclude any editing.
